Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Joins BJP After Resignation

Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay made headlines as he tendered his resignation from the esteemed position, only to swiftly announce his foray into politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His decision, unveiled just hours after submitting his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, marks a significant shift in his career trajectory.

Reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI) detail that Justice Gangopadhyay, in his resignation letter, addressed to President Murmu and copied to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, cited personal reasons for his departure from the judiciary.

However, the abrupt resignation was followed by a startling announcement from Justice Gangopadhyay on Tuesday, wherein he declared his alignment with the BJP and expressed his intent to contest in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This decision has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions within political circles, given his significant background in the judiciary.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s departure from the Calcutta High Court was marked by poignant scenes on his final working day, as Room Number 17 witnessed a gathering of lawmakers and common people bidding farewell to the esteemed judge.

The move into politics wasn’t entirely unforeseen, as Justice Gangopadhyay had hinted at such a transition earlier. During previous interactions with the media, he had indicated his willingness to explore political avenues, mentioning parties such as the Congress, Left, and various smaller parties. Notably absent from his considerations was the Trinamool Congress, against which he has vocally criticized in his judicial orders and media appearances.

In his scathing remarks against the ruling Trinamool Congress, Justice Gangopadhyay has characterized West Bengal under its governance as an “empire of thieves (chourjyasamrajya).” His vocal opposition to the party further solidified his decision to distance himself from it, stating unequivocally that there was no possibility of joining its ranks.

As Justice Gangopadhyay embarks on this new chapter in his career, his entry into the political arena is poised to bring significant dynamics to the unfolding political landscape in West Bengal, echoing his steadfast commitment to his beliefs and principles.
